NGBM (Nani Gopal Bandyopadhyay Memorial) Foundation has been officially established on 25 May 2022 at the ancestors’ property in Humania Pota Village, Nadia District, post the 2nd wave of Covid 19 pandemic, though charitable activities like free education for needy students had started since 2018.
The present generations of Humania Pota Bandyopadhyay Family have picked up the thread of social up-liftment of villagers, from their ancestors. In AD 1745, under the direction of Maharaja Krishna Chandra Rai, the then King of Krishnanagar (Nadia); Home Pota (Humania Pota) village was established. Maharaja Krishna Chandra Rai had extended financial assistance (1200 bigha of land and cattle) to Shri Rati Kanta Bandhopadhyay (the 1st Generation of Bandyopadhyay family in this village), as a gratitude of his service to his kingdom. Shri Rati Kanta Bandhopadhyay then migrated and settled in the newly established village, which was then named as Home Pota, since there used to be home yoga often held in the village. Since then, eight generations of Bandyopadhyay ancestors have lived in this village and they led from the front for the overall development of the village, from the scratch. The village was devoid of any human being and had nothing other than abandoned land, water body and forest. The name of the village however, got more civilized as Humania Pota, with the passage of time.
Shri Haran Chandra Bandyopadhyay, the 6th generation of Bandyopadhyay family had established the first education centre (primary school), in the village, in 1850 AD, in his own house Bandyopadhyay Bhavan, also popularly called as ‘Thakur Bari’. In 1900 AD, this primary school was shifted to a newly constructed building in the outer house. His son, Shri Nanigopal Bandyopadhyay, the 7th Gen was the only educated person in the village then. He joined the school and remained as head teacher from 1903-43 AD. His wife’s name is Smt Nalini Debi. They had their four sons namely Lalit Mohan, Kishori Mohan, Krishna Mohan, Hari Mohan and only daughter Smt Karuna Moye Devi. All of them were talented in their own fields and highly motivated to serve for the villagers. Inspired by their parents, his eldest son, Shri Lalit Mohan served in the same Primary School till 1980, as head teacher. This school was moved to a new building (Paschimpara) in 1954 and became the 1st Government affiliated primary school in the village. Starting with Shri Haran Chandra (great great grandfather), Shri Nanigopal Bandyopadhyay, the great grandfather of present day Bandyopadhyay family, consequently his four sons have contributed immensely in their life time, for the development and up-liftment of people of Majergram Panchayet jurisdiction and especially for Humania Pota village, till recently.
The current Generation and the Gen next are highly enthusiast to carry forward the family legacy. While lots of facilities have been extended by the consecutive governments, there is always ‘DIL MANGE MORE‘ for the people of the area. The newly formed NGBM Foundation intends to extend such facilities, which the current gen is deprived off, being in a remote village. This extends from simple medical help, to skill development and Modern Education, interspersed with cultural ethos and awareness campaign.
