SHRI KRISHNA MOHAN BANDYOPADHYAY

Shri Krishna Mohan, the third child of Shri Nonigopal Bandyopadhyay. He was born in 1924 in village Humania Pota. His childhood was in the same village; consequently he stayed with a family friend in Ranaghat and completed Matriculation. Under influence of the family friend, he then joined a British Farm as Accountant in Calcutta and admitted to City College for undergraduate studies. However, his orientation was for social service. Hence, he voluntarily resigned from the job in Calcutta and relocated in Humania Pota village to serve for the people of the village.

Having returned to the village, he dedicated himself to teach students in a make shift Primary School as Teacher, in 1948 in the adjacent village Aditya pur. With his teaching ability, free coaching service at home and his initiative in multiple social activities, he in no time developed enormous good will with public in all villages of Majhergram Anchal.

Krishna Mohan was multi-talented, while being in Calcutta, he formed cultural club named ‘Mela Mesha Sangha’, in Humania Pota village. This club used to perform Plays, Drama, Jatra etc in the village, that became hugely popular. His public relation was superb, a die-hard congress man with Nehru-Gandhi ideology, he then formed another association named ‘Mandal Congress’, wherein members from neighbouring villages joined hands, primarily to empower people in the villages.

He then took on another project for the villages around. There was no Post Office in the nearby villages and none qualified to run a post office. He took initiative and was instrumental in establishing a Post Office in his own house ‘Bandopadhyay Bhaban’, and took charge as the First Post Master of the village.

Soon after, People of Majhergram Panchayet chose him as Anchal Pradhan for two consecutive tenures, as a mark for his sincerity, impeccable honesty and humble approach to life.  His tireless involvement with multiple simultaneous activities as Post Master, Head Teacher, Anchal Pradhan and many other social activities was unparallel of the time. His selfless service in looking after thousands of refugees from Bangladesh (the then East Pakistan), in 1971 was commendable.

He did not stop serving even without a post. He motivated and mobilised all influential and educated young youth of the village to establish a Secondary High School in the village. Today’s Abdul Aziz Higher Secondary School in Humania Pota was his dream project, which he established with his persuasive hard work and vision.

Krishna Mohan died at the age of 93, in 2017. He is survived by six sons and three daughters. All of them have done well in their profession and carrying the legacy of social service for the village. His long time dream to establish a formal society has been recently initiated by the next generation, in the memory of Bandyopadhyay Family as ‘Nani Gopal Bandyopadhyay Memorial Foundation’ (NGBM), to serve the people of the area.
